Zags Speed Through Sweep of Eastern Washington

SPOKANE, Wash.--In well under two hours -- 1:46, to be exact -- the Gonzaga women's tennis team completed a dominant 7-0 sweep of local foe Eastern Washington Friday evening. After Nevada Apollo and Domonique Garley ground out a 6-4 win in doubles play, the Zags turned it on in singles. Individually, every Bulldog ceded just four games or fewer to her opponent, with Alex Bourguignon and Graciela Rosas leading the way at two games lost each.
"Once they settled down, they took care of business," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "That's what we've talked about, staying within themselves and their capabilities. Just settling down and being the best Gonzaga we can be, that's what happened out there in singles."
Rosas was the first to finish her singles match. The sophomore dispatched Marta Heinen 6-2, 6-0 on court four and put the Zags up 2-0 in the dual. Not long after, Apollo put away Erin Blessing at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2. With the win, Apollo remained unbeaten inside The Stevens Center this year, collecting eight wins across tournament and dual play.
At No. 1 singles, Sophie Whittle clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory, but both Kate Ketels and Garley completed their victories within a minute of Whittle. Ketels downed Katrina Domingo 6-2, 6-2 on court five, and Garley beat Valentina Sottile 6-3, 6-0 one court down.
On court three, Bourguignon confirmed the sweep by defeating Carolina Lopez. The junior swept the contest's first set 6-0 before taking the second 6-2.
Gonzaga also swept the doubles point to open the match. At No. 3 singles, Bourguignon and Rosas made quick work of Heinen and Jennifer Lewis for a 6-0 win, and Whittle and Ketels followed up with a 6-2 victory on court one. Apollo and Garley's win on court two capped off the doubles sweep and kick-started the Zags' hot play in singles.
"It helps to have gotten off the court so quick, but we're still going to head back and get in the ice bath," said Gurule about his team recovering before Saturday, Feb. 11's match against Seattle U. "It's not a quick turn-around, but still, two matches back-to-back, and Seattle U's going to be tough. It's nice being off the court so fast tonight."
The win over Eastern Washington is Gonzaga's first sweep of the year. The Zags had four such victories last season.
Gonzaga (2-0) will look to rest up for Saturday's showdown with Seattle U. That in-state contest will begin at 3:00 p.m., again at The Stevens Center.
