NCAA Regional Round Two Pairin
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Bianca Pagdanganan put together a steady round in the first day of the NCAA Regional Championship at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. on Monday. She erased three bogeys with birdies on the first and 13th holes to finish +1 (73) and in a tie for 14th place. After one day, she sits four strokes off the lead, as Laura Kowohi of North Caroline State sits alone at -3, up one spot on second place.
Pagdanganan was on target, hitting 16 of 18 greens, but had to battle strong winds the last 11 holes.
"I am pretty satisfied with how I played today," Pagdanganan said. "I could have scored lower by making some of my putts, but considering the conditions, I'm content with my score today."
Pagdanganan opened her round with a fury, holing a birdie on the first hole of the event, the par-five first. She played a very clean round from there, parring the next five holes that included four par-four's and a par-three. She bogeyed the par-four seventh, before pars on the par-three eighth and par-five ninth, the longest hole on the course, allowed her to finish her front nine even par.
She made pars on the first three holes on the back, two par-four holes sandwiched around a par-three, before rolling a birdie on the par-four 13th. She moved back to even on the next hole though with a bogey on the par-five 14th. She recorded a par on the short par-four 15th. After pars on the par-three 16th and par-four 17th, she bogeyed the par-five final hole to finish +1 on the day.
"Bianca played a solid round of golf today," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. "She hit the ball well and had good speed on the greens. We are happy with how she went about her business. If we could pick one thing to work on for tomorrow, it would be to be a little more aggressive on our approach shots when we are in good position off the tee."
Tatiana Wijaya of Pepperdine (-2) and Albane Valenzuela of Stanford (-1) are the only other golfers who shot under par, along with Kowohi. They are 10 competitors tied at even par and 10 at +1. WCC-foe Pepperdine has four golfers in the top-15. The 73 is the 10th round at or below 73 in Gonzaga's history in the NCAA Regional round. Pagdanganan was one of only 12 golfers to go even or better on the par-four holes Monday, as she was even.
From each of these four regionals, the low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams (for a total of 24 teams and 12 individuals) advance to the national championships, May 19-24, 2017, hosted by Northern Illinois University at Rich Harvest Farms, in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Pagdanganan will once again tee off at 7:15 am PST tomorrow on hole number one. She will be joined by Martina Edberg of CSU Fullerton and Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir of Fresno State, who are also tied in 14th at +1.
