SEATTLE – The Gonzaga men's rowing team closed their fall schedule with solid finishes at the 39
th annual Head of the Lake Sunday. The Zags' varsity eight boat placed third in the Men's Collegiate/Open 8+ Ben Porter Cup.
The GU Varsity 8 finished the 4,800-meter course at 15:40.286. Regatta co-host Washington placed first with a time of 14:28.161. Oregon State was second at 15:29.820. The Bulldogs finished ahead of UC Davis (15:59.353) and Washington State (16:03.402).
The event, co-hosted by the University of Washington and Lake Washington Rowing Club, featured a three-mile course, which started in Lake Union, crossed Portage Bay, ran through the Montlake Cut and finishes in Union Bay of Lake Washington.
The Zags' second varsity eight boat placed fourth, crossing the line at 16:13.500. Washington won the Men's Collegiate JV 8+ race at 14:46.357.
The Huskies swept the top three spots in the Men's Collegiate 3V 8+ race. GU came in fifth at 17:53.163.
"Really solid races in the Varsity 8 and Junior Varsity 8," Gonzaga Head Coach
Dan Gehn said. "The guys went out and battled all the way down the course. The Third Varsity 8 also did a nice job with a mix of novices in the boat. This was a really nice step toward good racing in the spring."
