Women’s Tennis Announces Spring Schedule

Bulldogs face six teams that advanced to the 2018 NCAA Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's tennis head coach D.J. Gurule announced the team's full list of 2019 spring dual matches Friday morning.

The Bulldogs officially open the dual season in January, and their spring slate features six teams that advanced to the 2018 NCAA Tournament in singles, doubles and/or team play: Idaho, Duke, Washington, Washington State, Oklahoma State and Pepperdine.

"We have put together another tough and demanding schedule, which the team is very excited about," head women's tennis coach D.J. Gurule said. "They are ready to push themselves and test themselves against the top teams in the country."

The Zags open the season at home against Idaho before heading to Durham, N.C. for their second-ever appearance in the ITA Weekend Kickoff. Gonzaga will open the tournament against host Duke on Jan. 26; the Blue Devils are coming off a spectacular 2017-18 season that saw them advance to the NCAA tournament semifinals before losing to eventual champion Stanford. The Bulldogs will also face either Nebraska or Old Dominion, depending on the outcome of their first match against Duke.

The Bulldogs continue play on the road as they head to Santa Barbara, Calif., to face Alabama (Feb. 2) followed by a double-header against Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on Feb. 3. Both Alabama and Santa Barbara finished the 2018 spring season ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings as Alabama finished at No. 59 and Santa Barbara ranked 72nd.

Gonzaga enters its final four weeks of nonconference play in mid-February, facing opponents from the Big Sky, Mountain West, Pac-12, Big 12 and American Athletic conferences. The Bulldogs close the nonconference slate against Oklahoma State (March 8), Oklahoma (March 9) and Wichita State (March 11); both Oklahoma State and Wichita State advanced to the second round of the 2018 NCAA Championships.

The Bulldogs enter the heart of WCC play in late March, beginning with matches at BYU and San Diego. The Zags will host four matches during WCC play: Santa Clara (March 3), San Francisco (March 29), Pacific (April 12) and Saint Mary's (April 13). Gonzaga will complete the regular season on the road at Portland on April 20.

"For the team to be so excited about our schedule is a testament to their commitment to develop and compete," Gurule said. "I am really excited for this spring and I know the team will be ready."

Should Gonzaga finish in the top six in the conference standings, the Bulldogs will head to the WCC Tennis Championships held April 25-27 in Claremont, Calif. The NCAA Tournament follows the WCC Tennis Championships, beginning with the NCAA Regionals and continuing with the NCAA Super Regionals. The NCAA Tennis Championships will conclude May 16-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
