SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga baseball put together a late rally, but it wasn't enough as Pepperdine's six-run fifth propelled the Waves to an 11-8 win on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash.
Gonzaga (10-8) put the tying run aboard in the ninth with two outs, but Pepperdine reliever Jordan Qsar entered to get a fly ball to centerfield for the final out of the game.
Gunnar Schubert went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and an RBI, and Branson Trube scored four times in going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI on a solo homer to pace the GU offense. Schubert's first-inning RBI single kept his on-base streak alive at 18 games and his hit streak alive at 12 games.
On the mound, starter Alek Jacob went 4.0 innings, giving up seven runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. After LeBrun was ineffective in relief, Taylor Davis pitched the final five innings, giving up just one run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Gonzaga had three solo home runs in the game, the first two of which were back-to-back and put GU in the lead 3-2. In the third inning, Trube notched his team-leading fourth of the year and Jake Vieth blasted his third one batter later.
Pepperdine grabbed the lead back at 4-3, but Nick Nyquist hit a solo shot to left to tie momentarily at 4-4. The Waves then broke it open with a six-run fifth that gave them enough cushion to absorb two more from the Zags in the bottom of the fifth and one each in the seventh and ninth.
GU will be back on the field on Sunday at Noon for the series rubber match with Pepperdine at Washington Trust Field at Patterson Baseball Complex.
