SPOKANE, Wash. -- Left-handed starter Mac Lardner threw a gem and Gonzaga baseball got hot late on offense to beat Pepperdine 7-0 and take the weekend series on Sunday in Spokane, Wash.
Lardner threw 7.0 shutout innings, giving up just four hits while striking out seven and walking just one. Closer Casey Legumina came on in the eighth and gave up just one hit over 2.0 innings of work to keep the shutout intact.
On offense, the Zags (11-8) got it rolling in the seventh and eighth inning with all seven runs against Pepperdine (9-11). Nick Nyquist continued his solid run at the plate with a pair of timely hits, knocking in three runs and scoring twice himself.
Jace VanDeBrake also collected two hits on the day and scored once. And Gunnar Schubert managed a single that kept his on-base streak alive at now 19 games and moved his hit streak to 13 games.
The Zags got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a five-run inning that featured three hits and a costly Wave error. Nyquist ripped a two-RBI single through the left side to put GU on the board and Troy Johnston cam on with a pinch-hit RBI single two batters later. The Zags added bases loaded walks by Branson Trube and Jake Vieth to finish the scoring.
In the home half of the eighth, Nyquist added another RBI on a bloop single down the right field line. Then pinch hitter Nick Brooks brought him home with an RBI double deep in the right field corner.
GU will be back on the road on Thursday in West Coast Conference play at BYU for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT. Check GoZags.com for available links to live coverage.
