Fawley Cup
Apr. 28, 2018 | Silver Lake | 9:00 am PST
Medical Lake, Wash. | Row2K
ABOUT THE REGATTA:
- The Zags have won three Fawley Cups in the history of the event, with the last coming in 2016.
- The novice eight has the best record in the event since 2002 for GU at 6-7, going 3-4 in home races, last winning at home in 2014.
- The varsity four had an impressive 30-second win over Washington last season, breaking an eight-race losing streak. In 2003 the varsity four claimed their lone win since 2002 at home.
- The second novice eight is 3-7 since 2002, but carry a two-race winning streak, taking wins on the road last year and at home in 2014. Their two home wins since 2002 is second-best behind the novice eight.
- The third varsity eight broke a two-race losing streak last year and have won two of the last five races. The cup has only featured the third varsity eight boat five times since 2007, and 2016 was the only home race for GU since 2002.
LAST RACE:
- The varsity eight defeated Alabama, Sacramento State, and San Diego two weeks ago at the Lake Natoma Invitational to highlight an impressive weekend for GU.
- The Zags' top crew beat (RV) Notre Dame in a runner-up finish and took third in the Saturday opener.
- The second varsity eight and varsity four each recorded two third-place finishes and one runner-up.
- The Zags beat WCC-rival San Diego six times total on the weekend among the three boats.
EVENT HISTORY:
- Last season, the No. 18 Gonzaga Bulldogs won three of five races last year in Pullman against No. 12 Washington State. The varsity four, third varsity eight, and fourth varsity eight boats brought home wins for the Zags. WSU won the top two varsity eight boats.
- In 2016, the last Fawley Cup win for GU, both varsity eight boats encountered seaweed in the first 500 meters, which forced a restart with WSU ahead by seven lengths. The race restarted with that separation, but WSU caught a crab with 300 meters to go and the Zags finished 1.2 seconds ahead.
- GU won the varsity eight, third varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight, and novice four races in 2007, their best all-around performance in the cup. The Bulldogs varsity eight defeated the Cougars in a time of 6:31.94; their fastest finish in school history in that race.
AGAINST WSU:
- Earlier this fall in the 5000-meter Head of the Spokane on the Spokane River, the GU varsity eight raced twice, beating WSU on their second run by five seconds.
- The varsity four beat No. 15 Washington State by three seconds at 7:24.856, to comfortably qualify for the C Final in last year's NCAA Championships on Lake Mercer in New Jersey. It was their fastest C/D Semifinal time in program history.
"We are excited to be hosting Washington State in our only home race this spring," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "Washington State is a strong team and will be a great test for us. This race provides us with an opportunity to showcase a season of hard work, close to home, and allows us to honor our five graduating seniors, and thank them for all they have contributed to our program."
