SPOKANE, Wash. –Gonzaga women's soccer student-athletes, India Jencks and Jordan Thompson, won the 2018 Women's Premier Soccer League title with the Seattle Sounders Women Sunday.
 
After being tied 1-1 with Pensacola FC, the Seattle Sounders Women used a pair of second half goals to pull away with the 3-1 national title victory at Gordon Drummond Field in Norman, Okla.
 
"We're really excited that we got the opportunity to play for a national championship, because those chances are certainly far and few between," Jencks said. "It's definitely good fortune before the up and coming season at Gonzaga."
 
The team's in the championship game featured many international and Division I talents. Jencks, a redshirt junior, was tabbed honorable mention All-West Coast Conference. She scored a team-high nine goals, added two assists and finished with 20 points, which ranks sixth in program history and fifth in the WCC this season. Thompson played a team-high 1,707 minutes in her first collegiate season and was named the conference's All-Freshman Team.
 
The title is the Sounders' first since the club joined the Women's Premier Soccer League in 2016 and finished the 2018 season with a 10-0-1 record. They defeated Fire & Ice SC, the defending league champions, in the semifinals before defeating Pensacola, which was making a WPSL-record fourth championship weekend appearance in six years, in the final.
 
Seattle won the first Jerry Zanelli Cup, the championship trophy that was renamed in January to honor the league's founder. During Zanelli's 20 years as commissioner, which ended with his retirement in September 2017, the league grew into the largest women's soccer league in the world with 106 clubs for the 2018 season.
