Gonzaga Implements Additional Security Measures at McCarthey Athletic Center

The policy will help enhance the environment and safety at GU events

SPOKANE, Wash. – In order to provide its fans with the safest venue environment, Gonzaga Athletics is implementing additional security measures at events at the McCarthey Athletic Center beginning this upcoming season.

Security measures include metal detection technology at all entrances and a clear bag policy, which both keep safety and security a priority. These security measures will be in effect beginning with Kraziness in the Kennel on Oct. 6.

With each new year, GU Athletics evaluates its operations and fan experience. For the upcoming season, Gonzaga has made much-needed updates to the policies and procedures for events inside the McCarthey Athletic Center.

These proactive and preventative measures will enhance safety inside the arena and speed the security screening process for all fans.  Metal detectors will enable security to move guests through checkpoints efficiently, and clear bags will allow staff to easily and effectively check bags that are brought into the venue while greatly reducing the chance for a faulty bag search.

With the entry process possibly increasing the time it takes to enter the building, Gonzaga Athletics encourages all fans to arrive early or utilize the designated express lanes that are intended for patrons that don't have any bags or large metals items such as cameras or tablets. People entering the arena will be screened via walkthrough metal detectors or by utilization of hand wands when needed. All prohibited items should be left at home, including concealed weapons. Gonzaga University is private property and reserves the right to prohibit firearms from campus. Concealed weapon permit holders are NOT exempt from the restriction.
