Men’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Contest at SMU

Ben Willis had eight saves in the match for GU

DALLAS — The Gonzaga men's soccer team battled to the end in a 2-0 loss at SMU on Sunday in Dallas, Texas.

The GU defense held on for much of the game, keeping the Mustangs scoreless for the first 68 minutes until the home team posted the match's first goal. SMU added another goal in the final four minutes to make the 2-0 tally.

"This was a much better performance than Friday and a step in the right direction," head coach Paul Meehan said. "We are close to where we want to be yet still with some room to grow. To be fair, SMU are a very good team and likely one of the better sides we'll see this year."

Gonzaga goalkeeper Ben Willis saved eight shots in the match as SMU kept the offensive pressure on with 21 total shots, including 10 on net.

The GU offense posted five shots with just one on goal in the match.

Gonzaga will be back on the road for the final two matches of a four-game road swing at Sacramento State on September 20 and at UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 25. Check GoZags.com for full preview and links to live coverage.
