SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Gonzaga volleyball team fell in three sets (25-12, 25-22, 25-11) to San Diego Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.
Gonzaga (4-11, 1-3 WCC) was led by both
Sarah Penner and
Perry Ramsey with seven kills apiece while
Tiyana Hallums added 11 digs.
San Diego (7-7, 4-1 WCC) took off in the first set, hitting .433 for 15 kills off 30 attempts. The Toreros scored 12 unanswered points to open the set and cruised to the 25-12 first set win.
The Bulldogs responded in the second set, earning an early 2-0 lead behind two straight kills from
Kaylie Loewen. The set was close throughout, featuring eight ties and five lead changes as neither team led by more than three points. With the set tied 19-all, a bad set by USD gave the Zags the edge, yet a three-point swing in favor of the Toreros put the Bulldogs behind 22-20. Penner connected for a kill to cut the lead to one (22-21), but USD finished the set on a 3-1 run to take the set 25-22.
In the final set, Gonzaga was unable to corral the Toreros as USD hit .387 for 16 kills. The Bulldogs fell behind early 6-1, but a 3-0 run fueled by back-to-back kills from Loewen and Penner cut the lead to two, 6-4. Yet that was as close as the Bulldogs would come in the final set as USD put together a 5-0 run to gain an 11-4 advantage and continued on for the 25-11 third set win.
San Diego was led by Megan Jacobsen and Katie Lukes with 10 kills each while Anna Newsome added 25 assists.
Gonzaga returns home to host Santa Clara on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Martin Centre.
