Gonzaga at Nick Watney Invitational Monday and Tuesday

Zags back on the road in Fresno, Calif.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's golf team continues their fall schedule at the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State University Monday and Tuesday.
 
The 54-hole, two-day event will be played at the Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera, Calif. The fifth annual tournament has moved around the Fresno, Calif., area over the years, 2018's host, Dragonfly Golf Club is known for having giant oak trees, generous-sized rolling hybrid Bermuda fairways, large undulating bentgrass greens, five water hazards and nearly 100 bunkers. The Par-72 course plays 7,389 yards.
 
This year's field includes Fresno State, BYU, Cal Poly, CSU Northridge, Gonzaga, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Seattle, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and UC Santa Barbara.
 
BYU won the fourth annual Nick Watney Invitational, edging out second place finisher San Francisco by two strokes. The Cougars bested a field of 16 with a 13-over-par 865 with Peter Kuest also finishing at the top of the leaderboard individually. Teammate Patrick Fishburn was not far behind Kuest, finishing tied for third. San Francisco carded a 15-over-par 867 to lock down second place with separation from the rest of the field.
 
Some of the past competitors in the Nick Watney Invitational (called the Fresno State Classic and Fresno State Lexus Classic in years past) that went on to compete on the PGA Tour include Tom Watson, Craig Stadler, Mike Watney, Johnny Miller, Ray Leach, Bobby Clampett, Scott Simpson, Willie Wood, Billy Andred, Arron Oberholser, Mike Springer, Phil Mickelson, Tim Norris and Nick Watney to name a few.
 
The Zags opened their schedule last week at the Mark Simpson Invitational in Erie, Colo. Charlie Magruder climbed the leaderboard with a three-under par (69) final round. He finished the tournament three-over (219) in a tie for 24th. As a team, GU placed 11th, following an even-par (288) finish in the final round.
 
Monday's first and second rounds will be shotgun starts, beginning with Round 1 at 8:30 a.m. The third and final round begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. Live scoring via Golf Stat will be available on GoZags.com.
