SERIES NOTES:
vs. California: This will be the second-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and the Golden Bears. In the last meeting between the two programs, Cal swept the Zags 3-0 in Boise, Idaho in 1993. Against the Pac-12, the Bulldogs are 14-57, and their last win over a Pac-12 foe came on Sept. 1, 2017 with a five-set win over Arizona State at home.
vs. Fresno State: This will be the third meeting between Gonzaga and Fresno State and the first meeting in 20 years. The series is tied 1-1, but the Bulldogs hold a 1-0 edge in neutral site matches. In the last meeting, Fresno State defeated Gonzaga 3-1 in Spokane in 1998. Gonzaga carries a 27-45 overall record against current Mountain West opponents.
vs. Portland State: This will be the 19th meeting between the Bulldogs and the Vikings. PSU claims the edge in the series 10-8, but Gonzaga has won four of the last six meetings. These teams last met during the 2017 season in Spokane, a match the Vikings took 3-0.
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA:
Cal is 5-1 overall on the season including a 2-1 record last weekend at the South Dakota Invitational where the Golden Bears picked up wins against Northern Colorado and Northeastern while dropping a match to South Dakota. As a squad, California averages 13.8 kills per set hitting .237 to go along with 12.8 assists, 16.1 digs and 1.6 blocks per set. Sophomore outside hitter Mima Mirkovic leads the Golden Bears with 71 kills on the season averaging 3.6 per set; she picked up all-tournament honors last weekend after averaging 3.8 kills per set and 4.3 digs per set.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE:
The Bulldogs are 6-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to WCC foe Saint Mary's on Aug. 30. Fresno State averages 13.0 kills per set hitting at a .243 clip in addition to 12.3 assists, 16.1 digs and 2.2 blocks per set. Senior outside hitter Jessica Gilbert leads the Bulldogs with 3.26 kills per set while junior setter Madelyn Halteman adds a team-high 9.23 assists per set. Defensively, Fresno State is led by sophomore libero Reagan Leonard with 5.16 digs per set, good for 41st nationally.
SCOUTING PORTLAND STATE:
Portland State is on a five-match skid after its season-opening sweep of Long Beach State on Aug. 24. The Vikings average 10.9 kills per set hitting .176 to go along with 10.4 assists, 14.3 digs and 1.4 blocks per set. Senior outside hitter Jenna Mullen leads the squad with 3.40 kills per set hitting .153 while sophomore Maddy Reeb adds a team-high 8.30 assists per set. The Vikings have not won a set in their last three matches.
TOP PROGRAM TEAM PERFORMANCES:
The Bulldogs had a strong defensive performance against Iowa State, good enough to rank fifth all-time in a single four-set match. Gonzaga finished with 84 digs in the match, the best four-set performance since it finished with 85 at Saint Mary's on Nov. 19, 2014.
OPPIO IS ON:
Redshirt sophomore
Katelyn Oppio was solid for the Zags at the Montana Invitational. She finished the tournament with 25 kills hitting .339 to go along with nine blocks. In the first match of the tournament, Oppio finished with 13 kills off 23 attempst with just one error to hit .522. Though that mark does not rank in the top 10 all-time for hitting percentage, Oppio does hold the Gonzaga record for hitting percentage in a single match: .824. She set that record on Sept. 9, 2016 in a five-set loss to Nevada.
DEFENSIVE PROWESS:
In their first two matches this season, Gonzaga has demonstrated it can battle with the best defensively. The Bulldogs registered 78 digs in a four-set loss at No. 11 UCLA on Aug. 26. That number surpassed last season's four-set season-high of 77 digs, a mark they reached at Pepperdine on Nov. 4. The Zags nearly surpassed their highest blocking total from a season ago as they tallied 14.0 blocks against the Bruins on Aug. 26; their best blocking match of 2017 was against Pacific with 15.0 blocks in a five-set battle on Sept. 23.
