BOISE, Idaho — Gonzaga men's tennis battled to a 4-3 win at Boise State on Sunday in Boise, Idaho.
The win marked GU's first-ever victory over the Broncos, after previously going 0-4 all-time. The last meeting between the teams was in 2015.
The Zags took the doubles point and then traded singles matches with the Broncos the whole way through until
Sam Feit was able to clinch it on the final court left in action.
"Today we came out with great energy and the right attitude," head coach
Jonas Piibor said. "I thought we played gutsy when we needed to. I have great respect for Boise State and their coaching staff. The guys are still learning how to handle themselves during adversity, and that is something Cesar [Vargas] and I are continuing to teach."
Feit's victory on No. 2 kept Gonzaga undefeated on the season through its first three matches. He took a 7-5 first set before losing a tiebreak 6-7(4). Feit came out swinging in the third and cruised to a 6-2 win.
GU dominated doubles play, sweeping the matches with a 7-6(6) win by Feit and
Ruadhan O'Sullivan on No. 1, and
Kyle Everly and
Hunter Egger combined for a 6-4 win on No. 3.
Rettke and Everly each claimed the setup wins in singles play. Everly's came first with a 6-4, 6-0 win on No. 6 to put GU up 2-1. After the Broncos tied it 2-2, Rettke claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win of his own on No. 4 to retake the lead 3-2 for GU.
After a full weekend off, GU will be back on the courts against Idaho State and Weber State in Ogden, Utah on Feb. 9-10.
