Volleyball Travels to Santa Clara, San Francisco

Zags in search of first conference win

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga volleyball team travels to Santa Clara and San Francisco for West Coast Conference matches this week.

SERIES REVIEW
vs. Santa Clara
OVERALL: 14-50 | HOME: 7-26 | AWAY: 7-24 | STREAK: Gonzaga, Won 2
The series dates back to 1987 when the two teams first met in WCC play. SCU claimed the first four meetings, but GU countered with four-straight wins, its longest streak of the series, from 1989-90. The Zags have won two-straight against the Broncos and four of the last six meetings. Seven of the Bulldogs' 14 total wins in the series have come since the 2013 season.

This series dates back to 1986 when the two teams first met at a tournament hosted by USF. Gonzaga won the first meeting and dominated the first 12 years of the series winning 19 of the first 25 meetings. The Bulldogs have also controlled the last six years of the series, losing just one match since 2012. Currently, the Zags are on a seven-match win streak.
 
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS:
- Santa Clara carries a 12-7 overall record on the season with a 2-4 mark in conference play.
- The Broncos have picked up West Coast Conference wins against Saint Mary's and San Francisco.
- As a team, SCU averages 12.58 kills per set hitting .236 to go along with 11.51 assists, 13.71 digs and 2.56 blocks per set (good for 35th nationally).
- Three players average over 2.10 kills per set, led by Julia Sagaicomo with 3.30 kills per set hitting .215. Allison Kantor adds 2.85 kills per set hitting .237, while Taylor Odom averages 2.10 kills hitting .371.
- Odom also leads the Broncos defensively at the net as she averages 1.49 blocks per set. That mark ranks seventh in the nation.
- Gretchen Reinert adds a team-high 3.42 digs per set while Michelle Shaffer adds a team-high 30 aces.
- So far on the season, the Broncos are 4-4 in three-set matches, 6-1 in four-set matches and 2-2 in five-set matches.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN ON SAN FRANCISCO:
- Through 17 matches, the Dons carry a 4-13 overall mark with a winless 0-6 record in conference play.
- USF was 4-3 through its first seven matches, but it has lost 10-straight matches. The Dons have not won a match since Sept. 13.
- As a squad, USF averages 12.05 kills per set hitting .187 to go along with 11.17 assists, 13.92 digs and 1.91 blocks per set.
- Kathya Garcia leads the attack with an even 3.00 kills per set hitting 1.94. Ally Wada leads the team with an average of 8.54 assists per set.
- Defensively, the Dons are led by Orsula Staka with an even 1.00 blocks per set, while Anna Dalla Vecchia adds 4.02 digs per set.
