Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Portland on the Road

Gotta scored game-winner in 73rd minute

PORTLAND, Ore. – Gonzaga's Madeline Gotta scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to give the Bulldogs' a 1-0 road win at Portland Wednesday.
 
The Zags (9-3-0, 2-0-0 West Coast Conference) shutout an opponent for the second straight game, and for the fifth time this season. GU's Isabel Jones was credited with the shutout after making two saves.
 
The Pilots (4-4-2, 0-2-0 WCC) outshot Gonzaga, 17-15, but the Bulldogs had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Zags outshot Portland, 11-7, in the first half, placing six shots on frame. The Pilots had one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
 
Gotta scored her fourth goal of the season, including her third off of a penalty kick. She remained perfect from the PK spot this season, converting in the 73rd minute.
 
Gotta matched a game-high five shots in the match, placing two on goal. Portland's Larkin Russell also took five shots, with one on frame. Jenny Wahlen made five saves in the Pilot net.
 
It was the first Bulldog victory ever at Portland. The Pilots had won all 13 of the previous meetings at Merlo Field all-time. GU beat Portland for the first-time ever last season, winning in Spokane, 1-0. The Pilots own the all-time series, 25-2-1.
 
Gonzaga returns to Spokane and hosts San Francisco Saturday. The Dons (8-4-1, 1-1-0) fell at Loyola Marymount Wednesday, 1-0. Saturday's start time at Luger Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be on GoZags.com.
