Zags Face BYU, San Diego and Portland in Final Week of WCC Play

Bulldogs travel to BYU, USD; host Portland

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga volleyball team travels to BYU and San Diego on Nov. 21 and 23 before returning home to host Portland on Nov. 25 for its final three matches of the season.

The Bulldogs and Cougars' series dates back to 1990 when the programs first met at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah. BYU claimed the first five wins in '90, '94, '95, '02 and the first meeting in 2011, but Gonzaga picked up its first win in the series with a 3-1 win in Provo on Nov. 17, 2011.

San Diego and Gonzaga have met every as conference opponents since the 1987 season, when the series between the two programs began. The Bulldogs claimed the edge early, winning seven-straight from 1988-91 to have a 7-2 lead in the series, but USD has dominated since. GU has won two matches since 1991, and the Toreros have strung together a 50-match win streak dating back to the 1994 season.
 
SCOUTING THE TOREROS:
- No. 20 San Diego is 21-5 overall on the season with a 14-1 mark in conference play. The Toreros lone loss in WCC play came at Pepperdine on Oct. 24, a 3-0 loss. Currently, USD is on a six-match winning streak, including a five-set victory against No. 13 BYU on Nov. 15.
- As a squad, USD averages 14.0 kills per set hitting .278 to go along with 12.9 assists per set and 1.4 aces per set.
- Thana Fayad leads the attack for the Toreros, averaging 2.92 kills per set hitting .207. Katie Lukes and Megan Jacobsen also average over 2.50 kills per set with 2.71 and 2.57, respectively.
- Anna Newsome leads the squad in assists with 877 on the season for a 9.23 per set average.  Newsome also leads USD in aces with 28 on the season for a 0.29 per set average.
- Defensively, USD averages 13.9 digs per set and 2.2 blocks per set.
- Three players average at least 2.30 digs per set, led by Annie Benbow with 3.43. Fayad and Newsome add 2.53 and 2.32 digs per set, respectively.
- Lauren Turner leads the charge defensively at the net with a team-best 1.10 blocks per set.
- In the last meeting between the two programs, San Diego prevailed in three sets in Spokane. Chapin Gray led the Zags with eight kills off 22 swings with no errors to hit .364. Abby Knapp added seven kills hitting .368.
 
ROSTER REPORT ON BYU
-  The No. 13 Cougars carry a 22-4 overall record with a 13-2 mark in WCC play. BYU's conference losses have both been five-set losses to San Diego.
- BYU also has two losses at home this season: one to San Diego and the other to then-No. 16 Marquette, a four-set loss.
- The Cougars average 13.1 kills per set hitting .267 to go along with 11.9 assists per set and 1.6 aces per set.
- McKenna Miller leads the attack with 3.57 kills per set hitting .285; Madelyn Robinson ranks second in kills per set with 2.73.
- Whitney Bower leads the Cougars in assists with 9.55 per set, good for 898 on the season. Miller also leads the squad in aces per set with 37, good for 0.40 per set.
- Defensively, BYU averages 12.9 digs and 2.6 blocks per set.
- Two players average over 2.40 digs per set, led by Mary Lake with 3.62 digs per set. Bower adds 2.46 per set.
- At the net, Heather Gneiting and Kennedy Eschenberg both average over 1.2 blocks per set. Gneiting leads the effort with 1.28 blocks per set while Eschenberg adds 1.20.
- In the last meeting, BYU swept Gonzaga 3-0 in Spokane. Sarah Penner led the attack with six kills, one dig and an ace while Zoe Thiros added five kills, five digs and a block.
 
SCOUTING THE PILOTS
- Portland carries an 11-15 overall record with a 3-12 mark in WCC play. Currently, UP is on a six-match losing streak with its last win coming against Gonzaga on Oct. 26.
- As a squad, the Pilots average 12.2 kills per set hitting .172 to go along with 11.5 assists per set and 1.8 aces per set.
- Liz Reich leads the attack with 3.45 kills per set hitting .167. Shayla Hoeft also averages over three kills per set at 3.11 hitting .241. Kellie Hughes leads the team in assists with 947 on the season for a 9.66 per set average. Grace Zilbert leads the charge in aces with 36 on the season.
- Defensively, Portland averages 15.4 digs per set in addition to 1.8 blocks per set.
- Carey Williams leads the squad in digs per set with a 4.89 per set average. Katie Barker leads the blocking effort with 0.82 blocks per set.
- In the last meeting, Portland swept Gonzaga in Portland. The Zags finished with 31 kills hitting .126 with 29 assists, 50 digs and 5.0 blocks.
 
SERVE'S UP
The Zags finished with seven total service aces last weekend to move into first place all-time during the rally-scoring era in single-season aces with 159. The Zags broke the 14-season record set back in 2005 with 153 service aces. Kennedy Croft leads the service game with 37 aces on the season. That number currently ranks second all-time in single season aces during the rally-scoring era.
