MBB Returns Home to Host San Diego

Zags look for their 22nd straight win over a WCC foe

THE TIP-OFF:
- Gonzaga and San Diego meet for the 94th time on Saturday in Spokane, at 5 p.m. GU owns a 71-22 advantage in the series.
- GU has won eight straight versus the Toreros, and 19 of the last 20.
- The Bulldogs are 34-5 at home versus San Diego all-time, including 15-0 in the McCarthey Athletic Center. GU has won 19 straight games at home in the series, dating back to an 82-70 loss on Feb. 17, 2000.
- Gonzaga is coming off a 93-63 win at BYU Thursday. Brandon Clarke scored 23 points, and Rui Hachimura added 20 points. Clarke and Hachimura both grabbed nine boards. Josh Perkins had 10 assists.
- Brandon Clarke is first in the nation in field goal percentage (69.4), third with 67 blocks, and third averaging 3.05 blocks. Perkins is seventh in the country with 148 assists and is eighth averaging 6.73 assists per game.
- Clarke is three blocks from matching the most in a single season in program history (70). He is currently third at 67, second is 69.
- The Zags are first in the nation in field goal percentage (52.7 percent), first in scoring margin (25.3), first in scoring offense (91.5), first in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.79), and second with 416 total assists.
- Through the first seven games, the Bulldogs are outscoring their conference opponents by an average of 31.0 points.
 
SERIES NOTES:
- This is the 94th all-time meeting between Gonzaga and San Diego. GU has a 71-22 lead in the series.
- GU has won eight straight versus the Toreros, 19 of the last 20, and 41 of the last 44 matchups.
- The Bulldogs are 42-4 against San Diego under Mark Few.
- Gonzaga is 34-5 at home versus San Diego all-time, including 15-0 in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
- GU has won 19 straight games at home in the series, dating back to an 82-70 loss on Feb. 17, 2000.
- In last season's meeting in Spokane, the Zags won 69-59. Johnathan Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. San Diego was held to 27 percent shooting from the field in the first half and finished 32.7 percent.
- In the latest meeting between the teams, Killian Tillie scored 17 points and Rui Hachimura added 16 in No. 6 Gonzaga's 77-72 victory at San Diego, that clinched at least a share of the West Coast Conference title for GU.
- The Toreros' last win in the series came on Feb. 22, 2014, 69-66, at San Diego.
- Gonzaga is 29-13 all-time at San Diego. The Zags have won eight of their last nine at USD.
- The Zags won the first-ever meeting, 72-62, on Feb. 1, 1980, in San Diego.
 
SCOUTING THE TOREROS:
- San Diego has had a week off since beating San Francisco at home, 67-63, last Saturday.
- USD trailed by as many as 14 points late in the first half, and 32-21 at halftime.
- The Toreros made 47.8 percent from the field, and held San Francisco to 34.4 percent. San Diego outscored the Dons in the paint, 36-24.
- Isaiah Pineiro led USD with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Isaiah Wright scored 17 points and Yauhen Massalski added 13 points.
- Pineiro averages a team-high 19.5 points per game, and Olin Carter III and Wright chip in 16.5 and 13.1 points per outing.
- Pinero also grabs a team-best 8.8 rebounds per game. Wright has dished out a team-high 79 assists.
 
A ZAG WIN WOULD ...
- Be Gonzaga's 34th straight over an unranked team.
- Extend Gonzaga's national best conference win streak record to 22, including WCC Tournament games, 19 without.
- Extend GU's home win streak to 18 games.
- Improve Josh Perkins' record to 122-17 in games he has played in for Gonzaga.
 
THE STREAK IN NUMBERS:
- Since falling at North Carolina on Dec. 15, Gonzaga has won the last 11 games by an average of 35.6 points (89.3-53.6).
- According to Ken Pomeroy (KenPom.com) the Zags' +217 is the largest scoring margin through seven conference games in (at least) the last 22 seasons.
