OGDEN, Utah — Gonzaga men's tennis suffered its first defeat of the season in a tight match at Weber State on Sunday afternoon in Ogden, Utah.
After dropping the doubles point, GU (4-1) was battling from behind, but was able to tie the match at 3-3 before the final point went Weber State's (2-7) way.
"First, congratulations to Weber State on the win," head coach
Jonas Piibor said. "At some point, we need to figure out how to play with a mindset of closing out our matches. We had many opportunities in many of the matches without converting. We are going to work on addressing those areas and continue to get better."
Weber State's doubles pairs swept wins on Nos. 2 and 3, but the Zags'
Sam Feit tied the team score at 1-1 with the first singles victory of the day. On No. 2, he won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Gonzaga's
Kyle Everly also earned a straight set win 7-5, 6-2 and
Emilio Moreno notched a three-set comeback win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Wildcats equaled GU's three singles wins with three of their own, including a third-set tiebreak win on No. 1.
Gonzaga will have nearly two weeks until its next matches in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Feb. 23-24 in a neutral site contest against Northern Arizona before taking on host UNLV. Both matches will be played at 11 a.m. PT.
