SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Gonzaga men's tennis kept up their winning ways with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory at Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Broncos took the doubles point, but the top of the Zags (12-5, 3-1) lineup was dominant, earning victories on each of the top four courts to get the win. Gonzaga also assured itself of its second consecutive winning season for the second year in a row.
"It was another solid win for this program on the road in a tough conference," head coach
Jonas Piibor said. "Santa Clara is a very good team, and we dug very deep to come through. There is a lot of tennis to be played this season, and I want to continue to see progress."
After the Broncos took a 2-0 lead with the doubles point and the first singles court to finish, Gonzaga got its first point of the day from
Ruadhan O'Sullivan. On No. 2, he took a 6-4, 6-3 win.
SCU pushed the lead back to 3-1 with a win on No. 6, but Gonzaga then took control of the match with the next three victories.
Sam Feit earned a 7-6(2), 6-3, win on No. 1, and
Kyle Everly came back from down a set to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to tie the score at 3-3.
That left the match to GU's
Vincent Rettke, who won the first set 6-3 and dropped the second 6-4. In the third, Rettke seized the momentum and won 6-3 to give his team the clinching fourth point.
Gonzaga will step out of conference for the final time this season on Sunday at UC Davis at 11 a.m. to cap the California road swing.
