STILLWATER, Okla. — The 39
th-ranked Gonzaga women's tennis team ran into tough competition in No. 8 Oklahoma State in a 5-2 road loss on Friday evening in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The Zags (6-3) battled in the doubles point and were able to take two singles victories, but the Cowgirls (8-5) got off to a hot start in singles to put the match away.
"Today was a tought match against a really great team," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "Unfortunately, we just didn't take advantage of some of the opportunities we had today. Against a top-ranked team like OSU you aren't going to get many openings, so we need to learn to jump on them when we can. We will regroup and get ready for another really tough team tomorrow in Oklahoma."
Gonzaga's
Sophie Whittle and
Domonique Garley each grabbed a victory over a ranked opponent in singles play.
On No. 1, seventh-ranked Whittle took down 26
th-ranked Katarina Stresnakova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. That victory gave her a team-best 20 on the season and moved her to 9-2 overall against ranked opponents.
On No. 3, Gonzaga's Dominique Garley came back from down a set to No. 83-ranked Marina Guinart. After Guinart won the first set 6-2, Garley came back to take the second 7-5 and then win the super tiebreaker 10-6 for the victory.
