SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball's
Nick Nyquist knocked in five runs and was just a single short of a cycle to propel the Zags to a 10-2 win at Santa Clara on Friday night.
Nyquist had a double, triple and a home run as part of a 3-for-5, five-RBI night that included 13 total hits at the plate for GU. His three hits came as part of a stretch where Gonzaga (18-15, 11-6) got to the Santa Clara (7-28, 2-12) pitching staff for at least one run in five straight innings.
"This was a good response from a disappointing Game 1," head coach
Mark Machtolf said. "Offensively, we strung together a lot of good at-bats and
Nick Nyquist provided three big hits. Alek [Jacob] wasn't as sharp as he's been, but he did what elite pitchers do and put up zeroes when he didn't have his best stuff. We are excited to come out and win a series tomorrow."
Starter
Alek Jacob and relievers
Nick Trogrlic-Iverson and
Taylor Davis kept the Broncos off the scoreboard until Davis allowed a pair of inconsequential runs with two outs in the ninth. Jacob went 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Trogrlic-Iverson threw 2.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts.
The Zags put the first runs on the board in the third inning with a three-hit frame that yielded a pair of runs.
Ernie Yake and
Guthrie Morrison each knocked in runs with singles, scoring
Daniel Fredrickson and
Josh Bristyan.
GU added two more in the fifth on an RBI triple from Nyquist and a subsequent sacrifice fly off the bat of Fredrickson. Nyquist then kept it rolling the fifth with a two-out, bases loaded double to push the lead to 7-0 for Gonzaga, before adding a solo home run in the seventh.
Gonzaga and Santa Clara wrap up the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Stephen Schott Stadium. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.
