Baseball Splits DH with Pacific

GU won Game 1 9-7, but fell 6-0 in Game 2

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga baseball split a doubleheader with Pacific on Saturday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field. Rain on Friday night forced the doubleheader on Saturday.

Gonzaga moved to 13-14 overall and 6-5 in West Coast Conference action, while Pacific now has a 16-15 overall record and 4-7 mark in the league.

Game 1: Gonzaga 9, Pacific 7
Gonzaga jumped out to a 4-2 lead and then posted four runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead. That was short-lived, however, as Pacific posted five runs of their own in the fifth inning to pull back within one.

The Zags pitching staff was excellent the rest of the game on the way to a 9-7 victory.

Troy Johnston led the offense with three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Guthrie Morrison and Austin Pinorini each had two hits. Pinorini scored three times, Brett Harris had three RBI, and Nick Nyquist had two RBI and two stolen bases.

Harris got the scoring started for Gonzaga with a three-run homer, his first as a Zag, in the first inning. The Zags added one in the third with an RBI double from Nyquist.

Then in the fourth, Gonzaga's offense really got rolling with seven straight batters reaching base, including three straight doubles as part of a five-hit inning.

After Pacific got five runs in the fifth inning, Gonzaga's Michael Spellacy and Alek Jacob through a combined 4.0 shutout innings with just one hit. Jacob picked up his sixth save of the season.

Game 2: Pacific 6, Gonzaga 0
Pacific jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and then kept the Gonzaga bats at bay in holding the shutout. GU managed just four hits in the 6-0 loss.

Nick Nyquist reached base three times with a hit and a pair of walks.

On the mound, starter Daniel Naughton went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson pitched the next 4.0 innings and gave up just one run on two hits with a strikeout.

Pacific added a single run in the eighth and two in the top of the ninth to put Gonzaga in a big hole entering the final frame.

The Zags and Tigers will wrap up the series in Spokane on Sunday at Noon. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
