Baseball Rolls Up Lamar, 16-0

Lardner struck out 12 in 7.0 innings

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball got on the bats early and often, and got a great start from Mac Lardner, in a 16-0 win over Lamar on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash.

Gonzaga starter Mac Lardner was just as good as the high-powered offense that was providing him run support. He went 7.0 innings and struck out 12 batters, allowing just four hits and no runs. On the offensive side, Ernie Yake had three hits and four others had two hits. Brett Harris went 2-for-4 with a homer run and four RBI, while Troy Johnston went 2-for-3 with a grand slam.

"I was impressed with the way we came out tonight, getting to their starter early," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We had three or four two-out hits early and it just changed the complexion of the game from the start. I think we have a good, mature group that bounced back from last weekend and is getting us going."

Matthew Henckel pitched two perfect innings to complete the shutout with a pair of strikeouts.

Harris got the Zags rolling on offense right away, capping a three-run first with a two-RBI single and then blasting his third home run of the season to left to make it 4-0.

GU added three more in the fourth after loading the bases. The first run came home when Pinorini was hit by the pitch, the second on a walk by Nyquist, and the third on a sacrifice fly from Harris.

The Zags padded the big lead in the fifth with a grand slam from Johnston. The homer was his team-lead-tying ninth of the year. GU added four more in the seventh with a two-RBI single off the bat of Isaac Barrera and one in the eighth on an RBI single from Slade Heggen.

Gonzaga and Lamar will wrap up the series on Sunday at 3 p.m. GU will honor its 10 seniors in a pregame ceremony. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
