All Over Zags: James Mwaura begins a busy weekend for Gonzaga track at the Payton Jordan Invitational Thursday night at Stanford. The freshman looks for a 5,000-meter qualifying time against elite competition. A number of Zags will look for NCAA qualifiers in the mile and 5,000 meters at the Spokane Memorial Open at Spokane Falls Community College Friday night.
Mason Villarma wraps up the week at the Ken Shannon Invitational. He's vying for a 1,500-meter qualifying spot at the University of Washington.
Last season at the Spokane Memorial: Three Zags placed in the Top-10 of the women's 1,500 meters, led by a fifth-place finish by
Aimee Piercy (4:58.33).
Claire Gillett (4:58.72) and
Elena Slavoski (5:02.62) were sixth and seventh …
Gianna Bacher placed second in her heat of the 100 meters at 29.41, while
Brianna Vasquez was second in her heat of the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.28 …
Jenna Rogers (18:45.24),
Monica Ripple (18:47.89) and
Kelly Gilbert (18:48.21) were eighth, ninth and 10th in the women's 5,000 meters.
At the 2017 Payton Jordan Invitational: Troy Fraley ran the NCAA's fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time to that point of the season … Fraley shattered his own school record with a time of 8:39.30.
Last Time Out: James Mwaura cruised to the 10,000-meter title at the Cardinal Classic last Saturday night. Mwaura shattered the program record with a time of 29:15.75.
Phillip Fishburn's fourth place time of 30:09.34 ranks eighth in program history …
Andrew Gardner won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase title with a time of 8:46.16. His time ranks second on the Gonzaga all-time list.
Kellen Manley ran a personal record of 8:57.03, which ranks third all-time in program history and 25th in the West Region.
Sammy Truax (9:08.97) and
Alex Walde (9:11.38) rose up the program's all-time list to ninth and 10th in GU history …

Yacine Guermali ran the fourth-fastest 5K time in men's program history. He placed fifth with a time of 14:02.64 …
Claire Manley was second in the women's 5,000 meters at 16:36.35. Her time ranks sixth on the GU all-time list.
