SPOKANE, Wash.—Members of the Gonzaga men's golf team had a busy summer, appearing in tournaments all throughout the west.
Senior
Chris Mogg kicked off his summer break at the Washington Open Invitational at Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent, May 20-22. After three days of competition, Mogg finished tied for 19
th, going two-under par (214). His final round featured six birdies, along with an eagle where he went one-under par (71).
The Oregon Men's Championship included three Zags in junior
Holden Backes, junior
Cameron Nicklos, and redshirt freshman
Keith Lobis. In the five-day bracket event at the Portland Golf Club from Jun. 17-22, Backes reached the semifinals before falling with a 71 (-1). Nicklos reached the quarterfinal round before falling with a 66 (-6), and Lobis was cut in the qualifying rounds.
At the PGNA Men's Amateur Championship from July 8-13, at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club and Chambers Bay, Mogg reached the round of 32 in the tournament after a finish in the round of 64 at 63 (-9). Nicklos reached the round of 64, before falling with a 63 (-9).
Four Zags had strong finishes at the Rosauer Open Invitational at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, from July 19-21. Sophomore
Zach Stocker tied for 10
th overall at nine-under (204). He finished the invitational, with his best round at 65 (-6), with eight birdies on the day. Mogg added another strong appearance, finishing tied for 25
th at two-under (211). His third round was his strongest with a 67 (-4). Senior
Matthew Ruel tied for 58
th at four-over (217), and senior
Nick Nolan placed 61
st at five-over (218).
Lobis had his best outing of the summer at the 67
th Oregon Men's Stroke Play Championship from Aug. 2-4, at the Eagle Crest-Ridge Course. He finished tied for 30
th, going five-over (221).
At the WSGA Men's Amateur Championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, from Aug. 6-8, Backes had his best appearance of the summer, finishing in fifth place going five-under (205). His final round at 66 (-4) included five birdies. Behind Backes, was Stocker tied for eighth place at one-under (209), with a final round of 69 (-1) and four birdies. Nolan tied for 25
th at six-over (216), and Ruel tied for 29
th at seven-over (217).
At the Northwest Open Invitational in Walla Walla from Aug. 19-21, Ruel led all Zags finishing tied for eighth place at four-under (212). Behind him was Mogg at par at 216. Nolan finished four-over (220) after going two-under (70) in his final round. Junior
Charlie Magruder tied for 68
th at six-over (222). Redshirt freshman
Keith Lobis tied for 71
st at eight-over 224, with a second-round finish where he went for par (72). Also tied for 71
st was sophomore Brent Salas at eight-over (224).
At the 61
st Army Invitational Golf Tournament from Aug. 1-3, at the Leilehua Golf Course at the Schofield Barracks in Hawaii,
Brentt Salas had the highest finish this summer of any Zag, placing fourth overall at two under (214). His final round was his best, with five birdies shooting a 69 for the day.
The Zags kick off their season at the Husky Invitational in Bremerton on Sept. 16.
