Elwer’s ninth-minute goal leads Gonzaga to third win

SPOKANE, Wash. – Lauren Elwer's goal in the ninth minute gave the Gonzaga women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Montana at Luger Field Sunday.

The Zags (3-1) won their third straight game, behind Isabel Jones' first shutout of the season and seventh of her career. GU had a 14-4 advantage in shots taken, placing six on goal. Claire Howard made five saves in the Montana net.

India Jencks led the Bulldogs with game-high four shots, while all three of Elwer's shots were on goal. Jaden Griggs had two shots for the Grizzlies (0-1-2). Both teams possessed the ball for 50 percent of the match.

Elwer opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a shot that curled in over the Montana keeper. Jencks played a ball back from the wing to the top of the box, where Elwer struck it into the back of the net. It was Elwer's third goal of her freshman season, off of Jencks' third assist of the year.

The Zags had 57 percent of the possession in the first half, outshooting Montana, 10-1. GU spent the majority of the opening 45 minutes in the Grizzlies' half of the field.
