Piercy and Arce Lead Zags in Season-Opening Meet

Piercy breaks 800-meter record and Arce eases to 3,000-meter title

MOSCOW, Idaho – Gonzaga's Aimee Piercy broke the women's 800-meter program record and Dominic Arce cruised to the men's 3,000-meter title in the indoor track season-opener for the Zags Saturday. GU sent 36 runners to the Vandal Open inside the Kibbie Dome.
 
Piercy placed third in the 800 meters at 2:15.78. She broke Jordan McCann's six-year old record of 2:16.66. Piercy also ran the second-fastest indoor mile in program history, crossing the line in first with a time of 4:59.33. Lindsey Drake holds the school record at 4:54.92.
 
Arce crossed the line in first with a time of 8:29.83 in the 3,000 meters. Lewis-Clark State's Cole Olsen was second at 8:36.92. GU placed five more runners in the Top-10. Kyle Radosevich (8:44.83), Alex Walde (8:45.47) and Matthew Roberts (8:45.55) were fourth, fifth and sixth. Riley Moore and Sam McCloughan were eighth and ninth at 8:48.70 and 8:48.79. Robert edged out McCloughan to win the second heat.
 
Six Zags placed in the Top-10 in the women's 3,000 meters. Lilly Visser led the GU pack placing third at 10:35.67. Brittney Hansen crossed the line in fifth at 10:39.22. Liz Hogan (10:40.25), Emily Phelps (10:41.83), Caroline McCarthy (11:02.41) and Katherine Gustafson (11:03.83) were seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th.
 
Ally Legard finished right behind Piercy in the mile with a time of 5:08.89 in second. Claire Gillett (5:14.04) and Alicia Anderson (5:15.77) were fourth and fifth. Jenna Rogers was seventh at 5:19.46.
 
In the men's mile, Cobie Chavez-Killinger placed third. The transfer made his debut for the Zags with a time of 4:19.80. Myles Bach was fifth at 4:20.73, while Evan Bates' 4:24.05 finish was eighth.
 
Lauren Krause and Morgan Greene tied for fifth in the women's 400 meters at 61.76. Emilee Groth was close behind in seventh at 64.43. Paxton Depoe (2:20.63) was fifth in the 800 meters, while Claire Gillett (2:25.86) was eighth.
 
"It was a nice rust busting meet for us," Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said. "It was a test effort in early January. They all have done training on their own, and it shows who their homework and it shows each student-athlete what they have to do to get better for the outdoor season. We've got work to do, but today was a good day to get things rolling!"
 
The Bulldogs send a select number of runners to the UW Preview next Friday and Saturday. Live video and results will be available from the meet inside the Dempsey Center in Seattle.
