DES MOINES, Iowa – Gonzaga men's tennis went down 2-0, but flipped the score and won the final five singles matches for a 5-2 victory in the season opener at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
Drake (1-2) started the day with a win in doubles, but GU (1-0) battled back in singles with a pair of victories from
Vincent Rettke and
Sam Feit. From there, GU put together three three-set wins from
Matthew Hollingworth,
Eric Hadigian and
Theo McDonald.
Down 2-0 after the first singles match finished, Rettke claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win on No. 5 and then Feit finished off his opponent on No. 1, 6-3, 6-4.
GU added another victory on No. 2 when
Matthew Hollingworth came back from down a set to take a 3-2 lead. Hollingworth dropped the first 4-6, but came back to win the next two 6-3, 7-6 for the win.
Hadigian, a freshman, also showed his resolve in a three-set win. He won the first set 7-5, but headed to the deciding set after dropping the second 6-3. Hadigian then faced a 4-5 deficit, but came back and went on to win the set in a tiebreak to clinch the match for GU.
McDonald added the fifth point in comeback fashion after dropping the first set in a tiebreak. He was steady from there, winning the final two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Feit and Hollingworth grabbed the lone doubles win on the day at No. 1, 6-4.
