Men’s Tennis Falls 4-3 vs. Western Michigan

GU moves to 1-1 with third-straight match coming Monday

DES MOINES, Iowa – Gonzaga men's tennis fell just short in a 4-3 loss against Western Michigan on Sunday in a neutral court matchup in Des Moines, Iowa.

Gonzaga (1-1) battled the Mustangs (3-2) throughout the match, eventually coming up short after splitting the singles matches.

"Credit WMU, they played well," head coach Jonas Piibor said. "However, I feel this was a missed opportunity, we did not get enough from everyone today. In order to be the team we want to be, we need more physically and mentally from each guy. Tomorrow we have another opportunity to be better."

Western Michigan came out on top in the doubles matches, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the point. GU's top pair of Sam Feit and Matthew Hollingworth, ranked No. 57, took down the nation's No. 41 tandem of the Mustangs' Jannik Opitz and Kennosuke Nouchi, 6-3.

In singles, Vincent Rettke got the Zags' first win on No. 5, closing the score to 2-1 after a 6-4, 6-0 win, but WMU won the next two matches to clinch the dual.

Freshman Eric Hadigian added his second straight dual victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win on No. 4, and fellow frosh Oliver Andersson won 6-4, 7-5 on No. 6.

The Zags have one match left in Des Moines on Monday, taking on Northern Illinois at 9 a.m. PT. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.
