SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team announced six additions to next season's roster Wednesday.
"We are excited to finally have these six players finally join us," GU Head Coach
Chris Watkins said. "They have the hunger, athleticism and work rate to keep pushing our program to new heights. We are getting even better today!"
Ashley Tonthat
M | Richland, Wash. | Richland High School | Three Rivers SC
Tonthat arrives at Gonzaga out of Richland High, where she excelled in both tennis and soccer in a three-year career. In tennis, she went 33-0 in regular-season matches, winning a state championship in singles in 2019. In soccer, the 5'0 midfielder finished with 43 career goals and 35 career assists in those three years, all three of which ended with all-conference honors. She won the WIAA Outstanding Student Athlete Award in 2018 and was named a team captain in 2019.
At the club level, she was named to the 2020 ODP National Team, making the West Regional team over the last three years as being named captain for Three Rivers for two.
2019 Richland Girls Soccer Varsity Captain, Three Rivers Soccer Club Team Captain, 2018, 2019, & 2020 ODP West Regional Team, 2020 ODP National Team.
Watkins on Tonthat: "Ashley has the technical skill and work rate to excel at the Division 1 level. As a midfielder, she understands and can dictate the rhythm and flow of the game. She loves to go forward and willing to step up and defend when needed."
Grace Courter
M | Bellevue, Wash. | Bellevue High School | Reign Academy
Despite only playing soccer her freshman year of high school — a year in which she played in every game and the team advanced to the playoffs — Courter brings a distinguished resume at the club level to Spokane. A product of the Washington State Olympic Development Team and Elite Clubs National League, the 5'11 midfielder most recently started 17 games for the Reign Academy U-18/19 team, scoring 2 goals.
Courter comes from a strong athletic background — she has five cousins and a sister who became college athletes as well. Her uncle, Andy Robustelli, was a Hall of Famer for the New York Giants of the NFL.
With a 3.93 GPA out of high school while taking numerous college classes through running start, Courter plans on graduating early before enrolling at GU.
Watkins on Courter: "Grace has the composure and intelligence to play on any field, anytime and anywhere. Her presence on the field is obvious and she brings another exceptional work rate to our program."
Kelsey Oyler
M | Meridian, Idaho | Rocky Mountain High School | Boise Thorns FC
Oyler's decorated high school career includes 3 state titles and 3 state player of the year awards in as many years — she's one of the most decorated Zag recruits in recent memory. Her junior year, the 5'7 attacking midfielder was the 5A Southern Idaho Conference's leading goal scorer and points leader, netting 18 goals with 27 assists for 63 points while leading her team to its second consecutive state championship. She recently won her third state championship.
A 3.95 GPA in hand at Rocky Mountain High, she plans on studying kinesiology at GU.
Watkins on Oyler: "Kelsey comes to us as the Idaho Gatorade State player of the year. She is lethal in front of the net as both a goal scorer and a passer and the pace to get behind defenses. She knows how to make sure her team wins."
Madison Mufich
M | Highlands Ranch, Colo. | Rock Canyon High School | Colorado Storm ECNL / Colorado Rapids ECNL
At the club level, Mufich was a captain each season, leading her team to three consecutive club state championships.
Mufich is a 4.0 student in the classroom, and is planning on entering GU's mechanical engineering program. In 2018, she was selected to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Program.
Watkins on Mufich: "Madison has the rare combination of a great work rate and the creativity to break down defenses. She's a great athlete with the ability to play on both sides of the ball."
Willow Collins
MF | Draper, Utah | Corner Canyon High School | Avalanche
The Utah native joins the Bulldogs after an accomplished multi-sport career at Corner Canyon High. She won two state championships in 2018, one as a starting center midfielder for the Chargers and the other in track and field later that spring. In soccer, she was a four-time first team All-Region selection with 25 career goals and holds the school record in the 800m.
A 4.0 GPA holder and multiple-time Academic All-State nominee, Collins will enter GU as an undeclared major with an interest in history, classics, political science, and law.
Watkins on Collins: "Willow was our first commit in this class. She's a great possession player with the skill and acumen to make our team go. Her work rate and dedication to the game are unrivaled. She also graduated first in her class at Corner Canyon High School."
Marissa Garcia
F/M | Rowland Heights, Calif. | John A. Rowland High School | LA Galaxy Girls Development Academy
A versatile midfielder/forward with an adaptive skillset, Garcia played a key role for teams in 2 of the top leagues in the country (ECNL and US Soccer Development Academy) with the LA Galaxy and Legends FC. With the Galaxy academy, she scored 8 goals in the 2019-2020 season, being named to the Top Drawer Soccer Weekly Standouts multiple times.
The Los Angeles County native also played basketball and ran track for John A. Rowland High, where she carries a 3.0 in the classroom. She's planning on majoring in business at GU.
Watkins on Garcia: "Marissa is a creator on the field. She has so much confidence on the ball, seeing things, playing all types of balls that most never even consider. She loves and understands the game on a different level."
