SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga baseball was unstoppable offensively, pounding out 17 hits in a 10-4 win over No. 25 Oregon State on Saturday at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
Senior right fielder
Ryan Sullivan led a Gonzaga onslaught with four hits, including a three-run homer, three runs and four RBI. Freshman
Gabriel Hughes added four hits, a run and an RBI, and
Stephen Lund,
Brett Harris and
Ernie Yake each had two against the Beavers (1-1).
"We were focused today from the first rep in pregame and it translated throughout," head coach
Mark Machtolf said. "
Alek Jacob gave us a good start, and we swung the bats as well as I have seen. We are looking forward to another good Northwest battle against the Beavers again tomorrow."
On the mound, the combination of
Alek Jacob and
Alec Gomez led the way for GU. Jacob went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts, while Gomez went the next 4.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Freshman
William Kempner came on and finished the ninth and allowed no runs on one hit.
Gonzaga got on the board right away, tagging the Beavers for two runs in the first. Two-out RBIs came from Sullivan on a double to score
Brett Harris and from
Gabriel Hughes to score Sullivan.
Meanwhile, Jacob continued to set down hitters through the first three innings, notching five strikeouts in that span. The junior continued into the fifth, but got into a jam before being relieved by Gomez. The Beavers put up four in the inning with a three-run homer to bring the score to 7-4.
Two innings later, GU answered with the red-hot Sullivan, who deposited an offering over the left-field fence for a three-run homer.
From there, Gomez and Kempner kept the Beavers off the board to finish off the win.
Gonzaga will face Oregon State again on Sunday at Noon PT/1 p.m. MT in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.
