SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's tennis head coach
Jonas Piibor announced the addition of transfer Leon Roider and incoming freshman Zach Fuchs to the roster for the 2020-21 season on Wednesday.
Roider and Fuchs will join Pablo Gomez and Sasha Trkulja, who signed with GU in December, to round out the 2020 recruiting class.
"Coach Cesar [Vargas Rodriguez] and I feel that we are getting two great additions in Leon and Zach," Piibor said. "They definitely fit the mold of our tennis team, and are not only good tennis players, but also good students and community ambassadors as well. We can't wait until we get to work with them and the rest of our team."
Roider, a native of Vienna, Austria, comes to Gonzaga after completing his freshman season at the University of South Carolina Upstate. He compiled a 5-3 overall record in singles action, spending time at both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. In doubles play, Roider went 3-4, with all three of his victories coming as a member of the Spartans No. 1 doubles tandem. USC Upstate reached the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament as well. Roider has a career-high UTR of 12.58.
"Leon already has a year of college experience playing as No. 1 on his team as a freshman," Piibor said. "We believe that he will continue to develop and have success here. Leon should have immediate impact on the team."
In his international junior career, Roider has qualified and reached either the round of 16 or round of 32 in singles play four times at the ITF Grade 2, Grade 4 and Grade 5 levels. He advanced to the Round of 32 singles ITF Grade 4 twice in August of 2017. In July and September of 2018, Roider moved on to the Round of 16 Grade 2 and Round of 32 ITF Grade 4. In doubles play, he has reached the quarterfinals of the ITF Grade 5 level.
"At Gonzaga, I am able to play tennis on a high level and get a very good education at the same time," Roider said.
Fuchs comes to the Zags from Los Altos, Calif., where he was a top-20 ranked 18U player in NorCal.
"Zach is a very talented athlete who we feel have a huge upside," Piibor said "He is also a hard worker which will help him transition well to college tennis and our system here at Gonzaga."
Fuchs claimed an ITA title in doubles and reached the finals of a National Level 3 tournament and the semifinals of the NorCal sectionals in doubles. A two-sport letterwinner, Fuchs also made the All-Santa Clara Valley Athletic League team in baseball.
"I chose Gonzaga University because it's a great academic school and every person I met there was super knowledgeable, energetic, and friendly. Also, the tennis program has really great team chemistry along with super dedicated players and coaches."
