WBB: Zags Cruise to 76-52 Win at San Francisco

Kayleigh Truong leads all scorers with season-high 17 points

SAN FRANCISCO – The No. 20/19 Gonzaga women's basketball team picked up its 11th-straight victory with a 76-52 rout of San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs remain the only undefeated team in West Coast Conference play at 7-0.

Gonzaga (12-2, 7-0 WCC) shot 55 percent for the game while limiting San Francisco (5-8, 1-6 WCC) to 37 percent shooting including 22 percent from long range. The Zags won the rebounding battle 39-24 while scoring 10 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs also dominated inside offensively, finishing with a 42-24 point differential inside the paint.

Two Zags finished in double-figures, led by a season- and game-high 17 points from Kayleigh Truong. Truong finished 7-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-5 from long range. The sophomore added five assists and four rebounds. Freshman Yvonne Ejim added a season-high 10 points for the Zags off a perfect 5-of-5 performance from the floor. Ejim added three rebounds in the win.

"That was a great way to end the road trip," Head Coach Lisa Fortier said. "My favorite thing about our team today was how we came out ready to play and matched the intensity of a team who plays extremely hard. We had a great pace in transition and battled through the physicality to shoot a really good percentage as a team."

The Bulldogs took control early, jumping out to a 7-0 lead behind buckets from Kayleigh Truong, LeeAnne Wirth and Jill Townsend. A jumper from Jenn Wirth with 7:10 to go in the period gave the Zags a 9-2 advantage. The Bulldogs shot 53.3 percent from the floor in the first period and secured a 10-5 advantage on the glass while forcing San Francisco to shoot 33.3 percent from the floor. Gonzaga led by as many as 11 in the opening quarter until a jumper from USF's Marta Galic with 1:17 to go brought the lead to single digits, and GU held a 19-10 lead at the end of the period.

The Zags were red-hot from the floor in the second period as they hit 9-of-15 attempts to shoot 60 percent. Kayleigh Truong scored nine points in the quarter, including back-to-back buckets near the five-minute mark to extend GU's lead to 17 (30-13). Gonzaga's defense effort was stifling, limiting the Dons to just nine points in the period shooting 28.6 percent including an 0-3 performance from long range. It marks the seventh time this season the Zags have held their opponent to single digits in a quarter. The Zags held a 12-point lead at the break, 31-19.

In third period, GU's hot shooting continued as the Zags finished 57.1 percent for the period. A layup from Kayleigh Truong with 8:05 to go gave the Bulldogs a 24-point cushion, but USF outscored GU 16-10 in the reminder of the quarter to shave GU's lead to 18 points (55-37) heading into the fourth.

GU cruised in the fourth, extending its lead to as many as 28 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor including 57.1 percent from long range. Zags finished on a 7-0 run—with all seven points coming from Louise Forsyth—to take the 76-52 victory in San Francisco.

The Dons finished with three players in double figures as Lucie Hoskova, Kia Vaalavirta and Galic each finished with 12 points. The Zags limited USF's leading scorer Ioanna Krimili (17.8 ppg) to a season-low six points. It marked the first time this season the Greece native had not scored in double figures.

The Zags return home to host BYU on Saturday, Jan. 23. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the McCarthey Athletic Center. The game is set to be broadcast locally on SWX; check GoZags.com for up-to-date game time information.
