Tucson, Arizona – The Gonzaga men's tennis team traveled down for the Arizona Invitational on the campus of University of Arizona. The Zags had a strong showing on day one, with six of the eight singles players and two of the three doubles moving on to round two.
Juniors Oliver Andersson and Leon Roider teamed up and are moving on in the doubles competition with a victory over Grand Canyon University, 6-3. They will face the duo of Jared Horwood and Hiroki Sakagawa of host University of Arizona next.
Freshman Arthus Bassetiere and Senior Theo McDonald also took home a first round victory over New Mexico State, 6-4. They will take on Nicolas Prieto and Georgio Samaha of New Mexico State in round two.
Sophomore Pablo Galvan and Graduate Tom Hann competed hard but fell short to New Mexico state, 6-4. They will play in the consolation round against Northern Arizona University.
In the singles bracket, six Zags moved onto round two. Sophomore Pablo Galvan secured the victory in singles with a set sweep over Jiri Novak of Grand Canyon University, 6-1, 6-2. He will take on Gustaf Strom of Arizona in round two.
Junior Leon Roider also earned a victory in straight sets over Northern Arizona University, 6-3, 6-1. He'll battle with Freddie Grant of Grand Canyon University next.
Freshman Arthus Bassetiere joined his teammates with a win in straight sets over Grand Canyon University, 6-4, 6-2. He will take on Gijs Akkermans of New Mexico State next.
Junior's Oliver Anderson competed in a hard fought battle, battling back after dropping the first set to win over New Mexico State, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. He'll go against Arizona's Hiroki Sakagawa in the next round.
Graduate Tom Hann and Senior Theo Mcdonald both fought hard but fell on day one. Hann went the full three sets, falling 1-6, 7-5, 3-6. McDonald battled but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. They will both play in consolation matches tomorrow.
The Bulldogs prepare for day two of the tournament with doubles beginning at 8 am and singles at 9 am PST.
