SPOKANE Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team swept the first round of singles and doubles, not dropping a match in the first round and only losing one match as the Gonzaga Invitational finished up day one.
The Zags wrapped up a perfect first day in singles, starting with junior Leon Roider, who defeated Guillermo Martin of Montana, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Matthew Hollingworth followed Roider's win with one of his own, defeating Sam De Vries of Portland State, 6-2, 7-6(2).
In one of the hardest fought matches of the day, graduate Tom Hann battled for almost three hours and took down Nejc Sitar of Montana State, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Freshman Arthus de la Bassetiere battled against Bruno Casino of Idaho, 7-6(7), 7-5. Junior Oliver Andersson defeated Lawrence Sciglitano of Montana 7-6(7), 7-5. Sophmore Pablo Gomez Galvan wrapped up the winning for Gonzaga in the singles bracket with a sweep of Nils Plutat, 7-5, 6-1. They will continue tomorrow starting at 8 a.m.
In the first round of the doubles bracket, the duo of Gomez Galvan and Hann took down Moritz Stoeger and Guillermo Martin of Montana State, 8-4. Andersson and Roider teamed up and defeated Marcos Zelver and Jacob Huppin of Montana, 8-7(3). de la Bassetiere teamed up with Oscar Brown of Portland and earned a bye in the first round.
In the second round of doubles, de la Bassetiere and Brown took Erik Sarlvik and Jeremy Mueller of Eastern Washington, 8-7(5). Andersson and Roider moved on by beating Gustav Thielgaard and Pontus Hallgren of Montana, 8-7(4). Gomez Galvan and Hann fell to Julien Penzlin and Nikolas Tvedt of Portland, 8-3.
TOMORROW
In the main singles draw, Oliver Andersson will take on Julien Penzlin of Portland starting at 8 a.m. Arthus de la Bassetiere will battle against Gustav Thielgaard of Eastern Washington starting at 8 a.m. Tom Hann will go up against Kyryll Kryvchun of Boise State starting at 8 a.m. Matthew Hollingworth will take on Francisco Bascon of Idaho starting at 9:30 a.m. Leon Roider will go up against Mario Duron of Idaho starting at 9:30 a.m. Finally, Pablo Gomez Galvan will take on Moritz Stoeger of Montana starting at 8 a.m.
Doubles will be played on Sunday.
