SPOKANE, Wash. — Santa Clara rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Gonzaga women's soccer, 3-2, at Luger Field Saturday.
The defending national champion Broncos (6-4-2, 3-0-0 West Coast Conference) won their third straight game to open league play. SCU fell behind 2-0 through the first 30 minutes and trailed 2-1 at halftime. After being outshot 10-7 in the first half, Santa Clara had a 12-3 advantage in shots in the second half. The Broncos had a 12-7 edge in shots on goal.
The Zags (11-3-0, 1-2-0 WCC) set a new program record for most goals in a single season with their first score of the game. Just 46 seconds into the match,
Erin Healy found the back of the net for the fifth time this season. Her 12th career goal came on
Lauren Elwer's fifth assist of the season.
Paige Alexander scored her first collegiate goal in the 30th minute on a chip over the SCU goalkeeper.
Kelsey Oyler was credited with her sixth assist of the season, which ranks sixth all-time at GU for assists in a season.
Gonzaga's 41 goals this fall is the new program record for goals in a season. The Bulldogs scored 39 in 2017 and 2019. This squad also owns the program record for assists (34) and points (116).
In the 41st minute, Santa Clara's Lucy Mitchell scored her first goal of the season with assists to Eden White and Alex Loera. Kelsey Turnbow recorded both assists on the Broncos' second and third goals. Mitchell scored her second goal in the 71st minute, before Izzy D'Aquila had her third of the season in the 78th minute.
Lyza Bosselmann made a career-high nine saves for the Bulldogs, while SCU's Kylie Foutch had five saves.
Gonzaga has a week off before traveling to No. 6 Pepperdine next Saturday. The Waves (12-1-0, 3-0-0) have won 10 straight, with six straight shutout victories. Nine of Pepperdine's 12 wins this season have been shutouts, including Saturday's 4-0 victory over Loyola Marymount.
