SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team hosted Idaho State on Thursday night and cruised to a 69-39 victory.
The Zags went on a 21-0 run in the first quarter to take a prominent 21-2 lead early in the game. After ISU scored the first two points, the Bulldogs didn't allow any more scoring until 33 seconds remained in the first frame.
Sophomore
Yvonne Ejim came off the bench to lead GU with six points and two rebounds in just five minutes of play. Senior
Abby O'Connor recorded four rebounds and scored three points for the Zags.
Overall, GU only allowed four points in the first quarter and held a commanding 23-4 lead.
Gonzaga kept the momentum in the second quarter as the team shot at 50 percent from the field. Defensively, GU forced six turnovers and scored six points off of those.
Ejim led the Zag at the half with 10 points, two rebounds and two steals. Senior
Melody Kempton and O'Connor both led the team in rebounds with four a piece.
Going into the third quarter up 38-17, Kempton got the Bulldogs going with a jumper within two minutes of play in the second half. Senior
Cierra Walker led the team in the third quarter with six points as she went 2-for-3 beyond the arc. Junior
Kayleigh Truong also went 5-for-5 from the free throw line in the third quarter alone.
In the fourth quarter, junior
Kaylynne Truong scored eight points within nine minutes pf play. She also recorded one rebound and an assist as she led the team overall for the second game in-a-row with 11 points.
Overall, the Zags outrebounded ISU 37-23 and forced 17 turnovers. The Bulldogs shot at a 52 percent and held the Bengals to a 35 percent shooting percentage.
Records: GU moves to 3-0 on the season while Idaho State drops to 1-2. The Zags have been undefeated against Big Sky teams since 2008 as ISU is picked to win the league title again this year.
The Bulldogs move to 7-2 overall against the Bengals with a winning streak of five games.
Sophomore
McKayla Williams had a career-high performance of six points as she went 2-for-2 from the field and from the charity stripe.
Bench Points: Gonzaga's bench scored 37 points combined. In the first three games of the season, GU's bench has averaged 34.7 points.
