WBB Falls Short to No. 7 Stanford, 66-62

GU’s 62 points is the most Stanford has allowed this season

SPOKANE, Wash. – With a game that saw seven lead changes, the Gonzaga women's basketball team fell short to No. 7 Stanford, 66-62.

Overall, Gonzaga had 26 points come from the bench and 22 in the paint. The Zags also forced 13 turnovers and scored 14 points off them.

The Bulldogs shot at 37 percent from the field and made 89.5 percent of their free throws. Defensively, Gonzaga held the Cardinal to a 48 shooting percentage and Stanford only shot 44 percent from the charity strip. Stanford outrebounded the Zags 36-31 as GU only turned the ball over 11 times against the Cardinal.

The Zags came out hot in the first quarter as senior Anamaria Virjoghe scored the first points for GU. Gonzaga's bench, which has been averaging over 30 points a game, scored 12 of the 23 points in the first frame. Redshirt sophomore Eliza Hollingsworth scored a clutch three-point shot at the end of the first frame give the Zags a 23-13 lead.

In the second quarter, GU had its largest lead of the game with 4:58 remaining and led the Cardinal 33-18. Stanford responded by going on an 11-0 run late in the period to make it a three-point game in favor of the Zags. Senior Melody Kempton recorded seven points in the quarter as Ejim tallied the other five for the team.

During the third quarter, Gonzaga had a six-point lead over the Cardinal before Stanford went on another run. At the end of the third, Stanford was up three points with Gonzaga shooing 50 percent from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs came out in the fourth to compete with the defending National Champion as it remained a one or two possession game for the rest of regulation. Hollingsworth led the team with five points in the final frame.

Kempton led the team with 16 points and five rebounds. Hollingsworth was right behind her with a career-high of 12 points and two rebounds. Ejim led the team in boards with six and recorded 11 points as well.

Records: Gonzaga moves to 3-1 on the year as Stanford also improves to 3-1. The Cardinal takes the overall series 10-2 with the series dating back to 2009.
