HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Gonzaga women's basketball team played in the first game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown and defeated the University of Utah, 89-71.
Coming into the game Utah was the second-best scoring offense in the nation and averaged 95.2 points per game.
Four Zags scored in double digits with senior
Abby O'Connor leading the way with 21. Junior
Kayleigh Truong tied her career-high with 18 points while senior
Cierra Walker had 13 and senior
Melody Kempton had 12.

Yvonne Ejim both led the team in rebounds with seven, a career-high for Hollingsworth.
As a team, Gonzaga shot at 49.2 percent and outrebounded the Utes 43-21.
In the first half, Gonzaga came out hot and had a 20-point lead with five minutes left in the half at 34-14. The Utes went on a run late in the second half to cut the lead to 40-29 going into halftime.
Overall in the first half, the team shot at 41.2 percent from the field and outrebounded Utah 25-11.
In the third quarter, Utah came within ten points, but the Zags rallied to hold onto the lead. Walker made back-to-back three pointers late in the third to bring Gonzaga's lead to 21 points.
Both Walker and Kempton recorded eight points in the third frame as the Zags shot 71.4 percent from the field, going 10-for-14 overall.
Gonzaga closed out the game strong as GU didn't let go of the lead for the entire game. O'Connor recorded four more points in the final frame and the Zags forced four turnovers over Utah.
The Bulldogs scored 23 points off the bench and 34 in the paint. The team also forced 13 turnovers and scored 19 points off of those.
Records: The Zags move to 4-1 on the year as Utah falls to 4-1 as well.
This was the ninth all-time meeting between the two teams as Gonzaga improves to 4-5 against the Pac-12 team.
Up Next: Gonzaga plays the second game of the tournament tomorrow against Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. PT. The meeting is the first between the two teams.
