WBB: GU Hosts BYU Tuesday

Mid-week contest rescheduled from Jan. 23 postponement

SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 19/17 Gonzaga women's basketball team hosts BYU Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. inside the McCarthey Athletic Center. The game is set to be broadcast locally on SWX.

THE TIP-OFF
- The Bulldogs extended their win streak to 14 games with a 79-52 victory at Saint Mary's on Saturday. GU's win streak is currently the fourth-longest win streak in the nation amongst teams participating in the 2020-21 season (Princeton has won 22-straight, but the Tigers have opted out of the 2020-21 season).
- With the win over the Tigers, Gonzaga improved to 10-0 in WCC play for the second-straight season and the third time the last four seasons.
- Gonzaga remains the only unbeaten team in the WCC at 10-0. BYU is second in the conference standings at 5-1.
- Tuesday will mark the eighth time in program history the Zags have played on Feb. 2, and GU holds a 5-2 overall record on the day. It also marks the second time in history GU has faced BYU on Feb. 2. In the last meeting, GU defeated BYU 87-52 and set two program records: three-point field goals made with 17 and three-point field goal percentage at 68.0 (17-25).
- Currently, Gonzaga is ranked 18th in the AP Poll and 17th in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs have now been ranked or receiving votes for 49 consecutive voting weeks, dating back to Dec. 3, 2018.
- The Bulldogs return three starters and nine letter winners from last season's squad that claimed the Zags' fourth consecutive West Coast Conference regular season title.
- In 2019-20, Gonzaga rose to its highest regular-season national ranking ever, securing a No. 11 AP and No. 10 ranking in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. Prior to the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zags were predicted as high as a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and were expected to host the First and Second Rounds for the first time since the NCAA changed hosting rules for the tournament in 2014-15.
- Gonzaga returns 79.1 percent of its scoring and 79.2 percent of its rebounding from last season.
- Gonzaga returns as one of the top defensive teams in the nation from a season ago. In 2019-20, the Bulldogs ranked third in the nation in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 51.9 points per game.
- The Bulldogs won 28 games last season, including a 17-1 mark in WCC play to tie their own record for wins in a conference season. It was the fourth-straight 25+ win season and 12th 25+ win season in the last 13 seasons.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
- BYU carries a 9-2 overall record on the season with a 5-1 mark in WCC play. The Cougars have had at least four games postponed or canceled in WCC play so far, including Tuesday's rescheduled game at Gonzaga.
- As a team, BYU averages 72.0 points per game shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and 35.0 percent from three. In all three categories, BYU ranks second in the WCC behind Gonzaga.
- The Cougars add 16.9 assists, 37.4 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game with 7.5 steals and 15.2 turnovers.
- Three players average double-figures for BYU, led by Shaylee Gonzales at 20.5 points per contest shooting 51.7 percent from the floor and 34.5 percent from long range. Gonzales also leads the league in scoring. Lauren Gustin adds 12.3 while Paisley Harding chips in 11.5 points per game.
- Gustin leads BYU in rebounding at 13.5 per contest. Gustin ranks second in the league in double-doubles with seven. Gonzaga's Jenn Wirth leads the league with eight.
- Kaylee Smiler is the Cougars' most consistent three-point threat, hitting 50 percent of her attemtps and averaging just over one made trey per game.
- Sara Hamson, a 6-7 senior center, leads the WCC and ranks 16th in the nation in blocked shots per game, averaging 2.73. Hamson is the NCAA's active career leader in blocks with 366 over her four-year career. The next closest active player has 326 career blocks.
 
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
[Feb. 1] With her second of 14 rebounds Saturday at Saint Mary's, Jenn Wirth became the 19th player in program history to amass 600+ career rebounds. Wirth now has 612 career rebounds, grabbing an average of 5.7 per game over her four-year career. Wirth is the first Zag since Jill Barta (2018) to grab 600+.
 
DIMES UNIVERSITY
[Feb. 1] Kayleigh Truong finished with a career-high nine assists Saturday at Saint Mary's, finishing the week with back-to-back career assists nights (she dished out a then career-high eight at Pacific on Jan. 28). The Houston, Texas native has recorded at least five assists in each of the last five games and nine of the last 12. Currently, she ranks second in the conference in assists with 4.35 per contest. On the season, Truong has 74 assists to 37 turnovers for a 2.00 assist-to-turnover ratio in 23.8 minutes per game.
 
WE LIKE THE STREAKS
[Feb. 1] Gonzaga is currently on a 14-game win streak, dating back to an 89-50 win at Wyoming on Dec. 8, 2020. In program history, Gonzaga has put together a 14-game win streak during in seven other seasons including three of the last four seasons. Its first win streak of at least 14 games came during the 2004-05 season; that year, the Bulldogs won 23-straight. That 23-game win streak still stands as the longest win streak in program history. 
 
WCC DOMINANCE
[Feb. 1] Gonzaga is currently on a 15-game conference win streak, dating back to Feb. 13, 2020. That ties the longest true conference win streak under Head Coach Lisa Fortier (WCC Tournament games not included).
