SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Women's team opened West Coast Conference play with a 2-1 victory over Pacific Saturday.
The Zags (3-1, 1-0 West Coast Conference) held off Pacific, after the Tigers outshot GU, 9-5, in the second half. Both teams finished with 11 shots in the match. The Bulldogs had a slim 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Gonzaga's Lyza Bosselmann and Pacific's Brenna Crump both made five saves in their team's net. The possession was split 50-50 in the evenly matched contest.
Gonzaga's Maggie Conners opened the scoring in the 26th minute. She found the back of the net for the first time this season off of an assist from Maddie Cooley. It was Conners' ninth career goal.
A little over minute into the second half, the Bulldogs' Haley Archuleta capitalized on a penalty kick to give GU a 2-0 lead.
In the 52nd minute, Pacific's (0-3-2, 0-1-0 WCC) Melani Medina scored on a strike off in the box. Nikki Lee was credited with the assist. Gonzaga's defense held off the Tigers and onto the lead the rest of the way.
