SAN MATEO, Calif. – Five members of the Gonzaga women's tennis team were named to the 2021 All-West Coast Conference Team, the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.
Cate Broerman,
Haruna Tsuruta and
Kate Ketels all earned All-WCC Singles Honorable Mention while
Hannah Jones and
Adrianna Sosnowska earned All-WCC Doubles Second Team honors. Ketels and Tsuruta were also selected All-WCC Doubles Honorable Mention.
Broerman, a sophomore out of Scottsdale, Ariz., played most often at the No. 3 singles position, finishing with a 15-1 overall record with five matches left unfinished. Her .938-win percentage is a program record (minimum 10 wins), smashing the previous record of .824. Broerman finished WCC play with a 6-1 overall record, playing at both the No. 3 and No. 2 positions for Gonzaga.
Tsuruta, in her fifth year with the Zags, earned her first singles all-conference recognition after posting a 13-3 overall record in 2021. The Fukuoka, Japan, native opened the season on an 11-match win streak, primarily at the No. 4 singles position, before losing her first match of the season in a three-set tiebreak battle against BYU's Emilee Astle on April 3. The fifth-year finished WCC play with a 3-2 overall record with three matches left unfinished.
Ketels, also in her fifth year, also earned her first all-conference recognition. In singles play, Ketels finished the season with a 6-11 overall record, most often at the No. 1 singles position. Ketels also had four matches left unfinished on the season. In WCC play, the Kalamazoo, Mich., native finished with a 1-5 overall mark, earning her first conference win in a three-set tiebreak battle over Pacific's Maya Lopez on Senior Day, defeating Lopez 6-7(6-8), 7-6(7-3), 12-10.
Both Jones and Sosnowska teamed up to earn GU's first-ever All-WCC Second Team Doubles honor. The pair played together at the No. 1 doubles position for most of the season, posting an 8-6 overall record including a 4-3 overall record in WCC play with one match left unfinished. The duo's four conference wins ranks tied-for-seventh all-time in program history.
Tsuruta and Ketels became the first Zag duo since 2018 to earn All-WCC Doubles Honorable Mention honors; in 2018, Tsuruta paired with former Zag Alex Bourguignon to earn honorable mention all-conference. This season, Tsuruta and Ketels paired together at the No. 2 doubles position in early March, combining for an 8-6 overall record. In WCC play, the pair posted a 5-3 overall record, which ties for fifth for the most conference wins as a pair.
