SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's soccer team announced their 2021 schedule Tuesday. The Bulldogs play eight regular season matches at home, including the opener on Aug. 19. GU's upcoming slate features 20 matches in the regular season.
The Zags begin their 2021 slate against Eastern Washington on Aug. 19. Gonzaga improved to 17-4-1 all-time versus the Eagles after a 2-0 win last season in Spokane. EWU was 5-4-1 in the spring, going 4-2-2 in Big Sky play.
On Aug. 22, the Bulldogs meet Georgia for the first time, squaring off against the Southeastern Conference opponent in Athens. It will be the first trip to the state of Georgia in program history, and only the fifth matchup ever versus an SEC opponent. GU then travels to Purdue on Aug. 26, for another first-time meeting. The Zags are 1-1-0 all-time against current Big Ten foes. Gonzaga closes August with a road game at Portland State on Aug. 29.
The Bulldogs open September with a pair of home games against Hawaii and Montana on Sept. 2 and 5. Hawaii has not played a game since the 2019 season, while Montana won the Big Sky Conference title last season, before falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Grizzlies went 9-2-0 in the spring, including 7-1-0 in league play.
Four straight road games follow at Cal Poly (Sept. 10), CSU Bakersfield (Sept. 12), Arizona (Sept. 16) and New Mexico State (Sept. 19). Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield also make their returns to play after not having spring seasons. Arizona went 9-5-1 during its spring slate, narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament. NMSU ended its season in the WAC semifinals, falling in penalty kicks to eventual league champion Utah Valley.
Gonzaga returns home for back-to-back games at Luger Field on Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 versus Omaha and BYU. The Zags shutout UNO, 2-0, in Spokane in 2017. Omaha went 8-5-5 in the spring and ended its season with a loss in the Summit League Championship. GU starts West Coast Conference play against BYU. The Cougars went 11-4-1 in the spring and 7-1-1 in WCC play, before falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Zags travel to Portland on Oct. 6, prior to hosting the defending national champions Santa Clara on Oct. 9. GU played the Pilots to a scoreless draw in Spokane last season, but did not face SCU. The Broncos were the 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament before making their national title run. They went 10-1-1 in the spring, and return plenty of talent this season.
On Oct. 16, Gonzaga visits Pepperdine. The Bulldogs closed the spring season with a 3-0 win over the Waves. GU defeated Pepperdine for the first time since 2010, and sixth time in program history. The Zags are at Pacific on Oct. 20. GU beat the Tigers, 2-1, in Spokane last season. The Bulldogs close October with a home match versus San Diego on the 23
rd, and at Saint Mary's on the 30
th. GU had shutout wins over both programs in the spring.
Gonzaga ends its home slate versus San Francisco on Nov. 3, and its regular season schedule at Loyola Marymount on Nov. 6.
