Gonzaga Grabs Impressive 3-1 Win at Georgia

Zags use two second half goals to pull away with SEC road win

ATHENS, Ga. — The Gonzaga women's soccer team picked up an important 3-1 victory in its first road game of the season at Georgia Sunday. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.

It's the third-ever win over a Southeastern Conference opponent for the Zags (2-0-0), but the first since 2012 at Vanderbilt. GU is now 3-2-0 all-time versus the SEC. Sunday's win came in the Bulldogs' first trip to the state of Georgia in program history.

In the 17th minute, Kacy Johnston played a long ball to Maddie Kemp just outside the 18, where she headed it through the Georgia defense to Kelsey Oyler, who then kicked it low to the far post past the UGA goalkeeper. It was Oyler's second goal in the second game of the season, while Kemp recorded her second assist.

Georgia (1-1-0) scored the equalizer in the 30th minute. Tori Penn had her first goal of the season, kicking in a loose ball off a corner kick. Madison Haugen was credited with the assist.

The Zags' Kate Doyle scored a highlight-worthy goal from well outside the 18-yard box in the 51st minute. The freshman struck a shot from distance into the upper-right corner of the net. Doyle's second goal of the season came off an assist from Willow Collins.

Six minutes later, Collins was credited with another assist, as Marissa Garcia recorded her second goal of the season. In only her second collegiate contest, the freshman drove a shot past the Georgia keeper.

Gonzaga possessed the ball for 46 percent of the match, but 67 percent of that possession was in the attacking half of the field. Both teams finished with 16 shots, but the Zags had a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

Lyza Bosselmann made four saves in the GU net, while Emory Wegener had three for Georgia.

Gonzaga remains on the road for a matchup at Purdue (0-0-2) Thursday. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Pacific Time, and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network Plus. Live stats will be available on GoZags.com.
