Men’s Soccer Rallies From Behind to Defeat CBU, 3-2

The Zags were down 2-0 before completing the 3-2 comeback over the Lancers

SPOKANE, Wash. – In a thriller of a game, the Gonzaga men's soccer team came from behind to hand CBU its first loss of the season, 3-2. The victory marks the fourth-straight win for the Bulldogs.

The Zags move to 4-2-0 overall on the year, marking the best start to a season since 2016, when the team went 8-8-2 overall.

Gonzaga is also the first team to score three goals on CBU this season as the Lancers have only allowed one or fewer goals so far this year.

"The team has found a few different ways to win in this winning streak," head coach Aaron Lewis said. "Although we never like to start slow, I was so impressed to see how our team responded again as a unit. Our substitutes played a part again in our sustained pressure that ultimately created the breakthroughs. I am super proud of our group and looking forward to again on Friday."

The Lancers (3-1-1) got on the scoreboard first with two goals from Bryan Iliohan in the 8th and 16th minute of the contest, putting GU down 2-0 early on.

The Bulldogs responded in the 24th minute as junior Demitrius Kigeya found the back of the net after a dish from sophomore Leon Sitz. The score marks Kigeya's third goal of the season as he currently leads the team in scoring.

Going into halftime down 2-1, the Zags kept pressure on CBU as GU had possession for 54 percent of the time in the first 45 minutes.

In the 72nd minute, Sitz scored the equalizer as he quickly scored inside the box after a slick pass from junior Sebastian Karlholm. The goal marked Sitz's first score of the season and in his career at Gonzaga.

Tied at 2-2, GU completed the comeback with a game-winning goal from freshman Wylie Trujillo in the 88th minute. After a throw in, freshman Milo Libby passed the ball to Kigeya from inside the box, who then quickly passed it to Trujillo as he snuck it past the goalkeeper to secure the win for Gonzaga. The goal is Trujillo's first of the season and his first one in a GU uniform.

The Zags did not give up pressure in the final minutes of regulation, as the team didn't even allow a shot attempt from CBU in the last two minutes of the contest.

Redshirt sophomore Johan Garibay recorded his fourth win on the season and collected two saves on the night. Overall, the Lancers outshot the Zags 20-9.
