Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. — The Gonzaga women's soccer team won their sixth straight match, defeating Arizona on the road, 1-0. The six consecutive victories are one shy of tying the program record set in 2005.
With the victory, GU (8-1-0) continued its best start to a season in program history. The Bulldogs played their third game of a four-match road swing. Gonzaga is outscoring its opponents 30-3 this season, taking 217 shots to the opponents' 83.
The Zags entered the match third in the nation averaging 12.5 shots on goal per game, and sixth averaging 23.38 shots per outing. Thursday, GU outshot the Wildcats 30-9, the second straight game the Bulldogs reached 30 shots. Gonzaga had 15 shots on goal, compared to Arizona's three. The Zags had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Gonzaga's
Maddie Kemp and
Kate Doyle both took a match-high six shots. Kemp placed three on frame.
Marissa Garcia also had three shots on goal. Kemp came into the match second in the country averaging three shots on goal per game, and seventh taking 5.12 shots per game.
After a scoreless first half, the Arizona (3-4-0) defense tried to clear a ball out of the box in the 59th minute, but
Erin Healy stole it and struck a shot into the back of the net. It's Healy's eighth career goal, but first of the season. It's also the junior's third career game-winning goal.
Gonzaga forced the Wildcats' goalkeeper Hope Hisey into 14 saves.
Lyza Bosselmann picked up her seventh win of the season and made three saves in the GU net. It was the Zags' sixth shutout win of the season.
The Bulldogs road trip comes to an end at New Mexico State Sunday. The Aggies (4-4) dropped their third straight game, falling at New Mexico Thursday, 3-1. Sunday's start time is scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific Time. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
