LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- The Gonzaga men's tennis team opened the Easley Memorial Classic in a dominate fashion in both singles and doubles action.
Graduate
Tom Hann and sophomore
Pablo Gomez Galvan competed as a team in doubles competition and won, 8-6, over the No. 4 seed from UNLV. The duo will continue play tomorrow against No. 1 seed Cal Poly. The other doubles win was junior
Matthew Hollingworth and sophomore
Sasha Trkulja. The two won, 8-4, over San Diego State University and will take on Grand Canyon University tomorrow.
In the singles bracket, junior
Oliver Andersson fell in an incredibly close match to Mariano Argote from Grand Canyon in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-7(7). Andersson went on to defeat Jakub Novak from GCU in the consolation round, 6-4, 6-4.
Hollingworth went on a run of his own in his bracket. He recorded his first win over Jonah Wilson from Arizona State University, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2. He then continued on to defeat Jordan Sauer from UNLV, 6-4, 6-2. Hollingworth will open with a match against UNLV tomorrow.Â
Trkulja won 6-1, 6-3, over Victor Castro from San Diego State University. He then continued on to defeated Zac Brodney from UNLV, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Trkulja will also continue competition tomorrow.
Gomez Galvan defeated Carter Crookston from Cal Poly, 6-2, 6-0. He then had a thriller of a match against Freddie Grant from GCU, winning 6-3. 6-7 (6), 6-4. He will compete through the rest of the bracket tomorrow after doubles action.
Rounding out competition for the Zags was Hann at the No. 16 seed, defeating Judson Blair from SDSU 6-4, 6-4. He continued his winning streak by defeating Tom Ciszewski from UNLV, 6-1, 6-4. His bracket will also pick up the competition tomorrow morning.Â
The Bulldogs continue competing at the three-day tournament tomorrow with doubles beginning at 9 a.m. Pacific Time.
