Zags Shut Out (RV) Denver, 1-0

Freshman Caleb Kiner recorded his first career goal

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's soccer team handed Denver its second loss of the season, defeating the Pioneers, 1-0. The win also marked GU's fourth shutout this year.

Freshman Caleb Kiner scored the game-winning goal for the Zags (5-3-0) in the 76th minute with the assist coming from sophomore Loic Baures.

"It was an awesome showing from our team to bounce back after a difficult loss on Friday," head coach Aaron Lewis said. "To have Caleb score the game-winner, after he felt responsible for the last result, was a really cool moment. I am really proud of the overall team culture our guys have created and that culture has been our biggest factor in this turnaround."

In the first half, neither team found the back of the net as the score was 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Denver (4-2-1), who has received votes in the polls, recorded five shots with one being on goal in the eighth minute. Freshman Wylie Trujillo took the lone shot for Gonzaga in the 42nd minute, which was the last one for either team in the first half.

Going into the second half 0-0, Trujillo took the opening shot for the Zags in the 61st minute and senior Noah Bushey took another in the 69th minute. The Pioneers kept the attack strong as they took six more shots in the second half with three of them being on goal.

In the 76th minute, Kiner scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs. The score happened after a corner kick from Bushey, which eventually went to Baures. Baures then crossed it into the box to Kiner, who then headed the ball to the back of the net. The goal is Kiner's first in a GU uniform as Baures' assist is also his first at Gonzaga.

Redshirt sophomore Johan Garibay made key saves for the Bulldogs throughout the match, recording six. The Stockton, Calif., native has now recorded four shutouts on the year and 32 saves total.
