PROVO, Utah – On a rain-soaked night at South Field Stadium, No. 19 BYU held off upset-minded Gonzaga women's soccer, 2-1, Saturday.
The Cougars (8-2-5, 4-0-2 West Coast Conference) snapped GU's program-record nine match unbeaten streak that featured seven wins and two draws. Both teams entered the match tied for second place in the conference standings at 11 points. It rained for the entirety of the game with temperatures below 50.
BYU came into the game leading the country in shots per game (25.93), and outshot the Zags, 21-7, but both teams finished with four shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars' Bella Folino opened the scoring in the 48
th minute. Her fourth goal of the season was a header off a cross from Brecken Mozingo.
A minute later,
Kate Doyle scored her third goal of the season for Gonzaga (8-3-4, 3-1-2 WCC). She struck in a loose ball in the box the slid into bottom corner of the net.
In the 67
th minute, Allie Fryer found the back of the net for the sixth time this season for the game-winner. Daviana Vaka and Mozingo were credited with assists.
Savanna Mason made three saves for BYU, while
Lyza Bosselmann had two in the Bulldogs' net.
Gonzaga returns to Luger Field and hosts Saint Mary's Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. The Gaels (5-3-6, 1-1-3) tied with San Diego Saturday, 2-2.
